Cognitive Behavioural Therapy | Brighton, Hove & Lewes

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has received much media attention recently due to the fact that it is the favoured type of therapy in the NHS for treating many different conditions.

CBT has an evidence base demonstrating that it can be effective for particular problems, which is main reason that it has become a therapy of choice.

CBT is based upon the simple premise that out thoughts affect our feelings, which in turn affects how we feel physcially and how we respond to situations.

Our emotions are not directly within our control. For example; we do not choose to feel happy for an hour, then do ten minutes of sadness followed by a few hours of contentment.

The areas that we have certain control over are our thoughts (Cognitions) and our behaviours (what we chose to do, or not do). If we change an area which is in our control it will have a knock on affect with others areas (See Diagram Above).

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy gives us a clear insight into what keeps Depression and Anxiety based conditions going, and provides specific techniques that have been be shown to be effective in helping to overcome them. In particular CBT can be good for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Attacks, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Health Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Phobias and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

From my perspective, I have found it an incredibly useful for working with people, and the application of this with Hypnotherapy has been shown to be more effective than either alone. However, I do not affiliate myself with any therapeutic approach over any other. Different kinds of therapies can be good at different kinds of things with different people. Therefore I wish to learn whatever I can about whatever is out there in an effort to increase my knowledge, skills and flexibility when working with people.
