Psychosomatic Ailments | Hypnotherapy Brighton, Hove & Lewes

Psyche is latin for mind and soma for body. Put simply a psychosomatic ailment is a disease which involves both mind and body. Of course this can be said of all diseases as it would be unlikely to have a physical disease that didn't impact on our mental well being in some way.

However, a psychosomatic disorder is commonly thought of as a physical disease which is thought to be caused, or made worse, by mental factors.

Now, this certainly doesn't mean that "it's all in your head". As you will know for yourself, the physical symptoms are real and valid.

If you are reading this then you've probably been to the doctor, and maybe had a series of tests with little or no conclusive results. It can be disheartening if the medical practitioner suggests it's a mental issue and you know just how physical it feels. This can lead to feelings of anger or guilt, perhaps feeling in some way blamed for the issue, or as if you have done it to yourself in some way.

Of course you certainly wouldn't consciously choose this for yourself. No-one chooses to feel stressed, anxious or low. Each of these have strong physical symptoms associated to them and will often make other diseases or issues worse. They also highlight that there are things in life which need attending to i.e. stress often tells us that we're doing too much and need to be easier on ourself.

If you have been thoroughly checked out medically, with no explanation of the ailment, then it might be time to consider the possibility there may be an unconscious unresolved issue which is manifesting itself in a physical complaint.

Unexpressed feelings of anger, loneliness, frustration or hurt have been known to take the form of bodily ailments.

Alternatively, you might consider reading more about Panic as this is a common factor for often very strong physical symptoms that are otherwise unexplained. People tend to think about anxiety as an emotional issue and often drastically underestimate just how profound the physical symptoms can be. Health Anxiety also may, or may not, be relevant.
