CBT & Hypnotherapy for Polyamorous Relationships | Brighton & Online
Ethical Non‑Monogamy Coaching & Support
I’m a CBT therapist and hypnotherapist based in Brighton, offering both face‑to‑face and remote sessions for individuals and couples navigating the complexities of ethically non‑monogamous (ENM) relationships.
As someone who has experience with ENM relationships and active in an ENM community, I understand the beauty and challenges that can come with these relationship styles.
Common Problems in ENM Relationships
Emotional Challenges
- Jealousy and insecurity: Feeling left out, “less than,” or fearing being replaced can arise even when there’s consent and clarity.
- Fear of abandonment or rejection: Particularly when a partner connects deeply with someone else.
- Comparisons between partners: Comparing time, affection, attention, or experiences can cause strain.
- Loss of specialness or fear of being “just one of many”: Especially if a previously monogamous dynamic is opening up.
Communication & Boundaries
- Unclear or shifting boundaries: What’s okay for one partner may not be okay for another — and these agreements can change over time.
- Consent breaches or grey‑area violations: One partner feels an agreement was broken while the other didn’t see it that way.
- Assumptions or unspoken expectations: Even in open relationships, unspoken monogamous norms can creep in.
- Difficulty expressing needs: Particularly if someone fears being “too much” or causing conflict.
Time & Energy Management
- Time scarcity: Feeling there’s not enough time to maintain quality connections with multiple partners.
- Emotional labour overload: Supporting multiple partners or being the one offering the most emotional processing.
- Life logistics: Managing calendars, nesting arrangements, family dynamics, or parenting across partnerships.
Personal Growth & Internal Conflict
- Feeling “not good enough”: Internalised shame, low self‑worth, or imposter syndrome in relationships.
- Difficulty experiencing compersion: Wanting to feel joy for your partner’s joy, but instead feeling grief or pain.
- Conflict between values and actions: Wanting to be open but struggling with the emotional cost.
Social and Cultural Pressures
- Stigma or secrecy: Fear of judgement from friends, family, or workplace.
- Lack of role models or community: Especially for long‑term ENM success, parenting, or ageing in non‑monogamy.
