Couples Counselling Working Agreement
Relationship counselling is a structured and supportive space designed to help both partners understand patterns, take responsibility for change, and move forward more effectively together. To support this work, we ask couples to agree to the following principles:
1. Taking turns to speak
Each partner will have space to speak without interruption. This helps ensure both people feel heard and reduces escalation. The therapist will guide turn-taking where needed.
2. No arguing or debating in sessions
Sessions are not a place to “win” arguments, prove who is right, or revisit disputes in the same way they happen at home. Instead, we focus on understanding what happens between you and how it affects the relationship.
3. Focus on self-responsibility, not blame
Each partner agrees to look primarily at what they can take responsibility for changing, rather than focusing on what the other person is doing wrong. Blame tends to keep couples stuck; responsibility creates movement.
4. Speaking from personal experience
Partners agree to speak from their own feelings, thoughts, and experiences (“I feel…”, “I notice…”) rather than making accusations or assumptions about the other person’s intentions.
5. Openness to feedback and reflection
Relationship counselling involves reflection and honest feedback. Partners agree to remain open to noticing patterns, even when this feels uncomfortable, and to approach this with curiosity rather than defensiveness.
6. Commitment to safety and respect
Disrespectful language, shouting, threats, or intimidation are not part of this work. The therapist may pause or redirect the session if interactions become unsafe or unproductive.
7. Willingness to try new ways of relating
Change requires practice. Partners agree to consider small, realistic tasks or experiments between sessions that support healthier ways of relating.
By agreeing to these principles, couples create a safe, constructive space where meaningful change becomes possible.
Sessions are available in Brighton or online via secure video call. If you’re ready to explore what’s holding you back in love and how to move forward with purpose and authenticity, I’d be happy to work with you.
