What is a Phobia?

A phobia is the brains way to avert from high danger scenario.

When a situation that is perceived as being threatening happens, the brain goes into 'instant record' and stores within it's short term memory banks (the Hippocampus) all the sensory information (sight, touch, sound, smells, taste) of the event.

When we encounter any of this sensory information again our brain sets off the panic button. For example, if stung by a wasp when aged four and a phobia was produced, while eating an apple and listening to 'Peggy Sue' by Buddy Holly, a phobic response may be triggered if you happen to be eating an apple when Peggy Sue comes onto the radio in the background. Other times it might simply happen by seeing wasps of course.

When the 'Panic Button' has been pushed, the body will go into fight or flight mode, injecting the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol into the body so that we're ready for action. At these times people will often experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Feelings of of being detached from yourself
  • Severe feelings of fright and terror
  • Trembling and shaking
  • Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Accelerated heart rate
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling of choking
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Hot or cold flashes
  • Fear of losing control
  • Fear of going crazy
  • Fear of dying
  • Fear of fainting

The approach to working with Phobia’s (and Panic Attacks) is an important factor in people’s recovery from this complaint as some therapists will ask clients to relive their experiences over and over, potentially causing the traumatic memory to be imprinted further.

Fortunately, there are very simple and highly effective techniques that allow the brain to reprocess the information. These safe and gentle methods allow the participant to free themselves of phobias in the most comfortable way possible.

Using these up-to-date techniques, a good Hypnotherapist can help you to eradicate a Phobia often between one session and three sessions, even with people who have been suffering from them for many years.
